How to Buy a Mattress

Shopping for your new Stearns & Foster® should be as enjoyable as owning one. Follow these 8 simple guidelines as you shop to find the sleep set that will meet all your needs and expectations.
When you are ready to go shopping for your sleep set, be sure to wear comfortable clothing and shoes you can easily slip on and off, as you will need to lie on a few mattresses to assess their comfort.
Measure your headboard and the height of your current mattress and bring this information with you to the store. If you decide to purchase a mattress that’s thicker than your current one, consider purchasing a low-profile boxspring so your headboard will remain visible.
Remember that just because a mattress is soft doesn’t mean it won’t be supportive. When trying out different mattresses, always start by lying first on the firmest mattress, then working your way to the softest. Repeat the process once or twice to discover what comfort levels feel most comfortable to you.
As you lie on the mattresses, think about how your shoulders, hips, and lower back feel. Give you body a chance to respond to the mattress at these key touch points. Unfold your arms and lie as relaxed as you can get.
Don’t be afraid to ask the salesperson for a few minutes or more to yourself.
Once you’ve narrowed down your choices, lie on the Stearns & Foster mattress you are considering for a minimum of 10 minutes. This will give you a truer feeling of comfort of the mattress.
If you desire, bring your pillow(s) with you. Most people don’t lie flat when they sleep, and each bed may feel different depending on the pillows you use.
Shop for a mattress and boxspring (also known as a foundation) as a set. Our mattresses and boxsprings are engineered to work together, providing optimal amounts of support and comfort for the life of the sleep set.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q. How do I compare the sleep sets?
A. The way to select a new mattress is to determine the comfort you prefer, and then compare your comfort preference in three qualities: top of the line, mid-range, and lower range price points, and understand each of the differences. This comparison helps you make an informed decision. If you like the comfort and price, the store services, and possible financing options, you can make your purchase at the first store. Know the type of sleep set and its significant features, such as type, comfort layers, and edge support.
Q. Does a mattress need to be hard in order to be good for me?
A. No. Stearns & Foster sleep sets are designed to provide correct support regardless of comfort level or price. Whether your Stearns & Foster is soft or hard, it will give you the same correct back support you need.
Q. What’s the difference between latex foam and memory foam?
A. Latex foam differs from memory foam in its elastic, open-cell structure that recovers from pressure immediately. Memory foam has a slower recovery time.
